A Spark for technology early on
Mateus can’t remember a time when he didn’t want to work with software. As a teenager, while his peers were still figuring out their paths, he was already enrolled in a technical course alongside high school. By the time he graduated, he had a strong programming foundation and knew he wanted to keep building on it.
He went on to study at Unicamp, one of Latin America’s top universities, where he found a community of peers who shared his passion for software development. Android development in particular fascinated him. In fact, his high school graduation project was an Android app, an early signal of where his career would eventually lead.
Building a career in Brazil and abroad
After university, Mateus began his professional journey in Brazil, where he spent three years at a local company. But while he was enjoying his work, Mateus had also caught the “travel bug.” About three and a half years ago, he took a leap: he moved to Europe to combine professional growth with new life experiences.
His first stop was Italy, where he continued working remotely for a Brazilian company. During this time, he led a key project for a food delivery platform that dramatically improved how drivers processed offline payments. By introducing MPOS machines and automating parts of the distribution process, he helped the company scale from 400–500k to over 1M monthly offline orders. This is a milestone that stands out as one of Mateus’s proudest achievements. Later, he relocated to the Netherlands, joining a Dutch bank to help develop their payment systems app. One highlight was contributing to the integration of the iDEAL (iDO) payment system, a core feature for fast and reliable digital transactions in the country. “It was a really cool project to work on, because it touched so many people’s day-to-day lives,” Mateus recalls.
Coming home
Europe offered invaluable experiences, both in career and personal life, but eventually, Mateus started to feel the pull of home. “I started to really miss my family and friends, and I wanted to find a balance between my personal and professional life,” he shares. Weighing the pros and cons, he decided to return to Brazil.
That decision brought him to Mission.dev, where he’s found exactly the balance he was looking for: meaningful projects, economic stability, and the ability to live close to family again.
Life outside of work
These days, Mateus spends a lot of time with his family, making up for the years he lived abroad. He’s also a passionate gamer and often joins friends on Discord to play together. Traveling remains a big part of his life too. While in the Netherlands, Mateus met his girlfriend, who is originally from Thailand. The two have now built a life together in Brazil, and their dream is to travel to Thailand in the near future.
Looking ahead
Mateus’s journey has already taken him across continents, through different cultures, and into impactful projects that millions of people use every day. What stands out most is how he’s found a way to grow professionally without sacrificing the things that matter most; family, connection, and balance.
At Mission.dev, we’re proud to count Mateus Battaglin as part of our global network of software engineers. His story shows how passion for technology can open doors to the world, while family and balance guide us back home. We can’t wait to see what he builds next!
